Annual HNL Runway Safety and Pilot-Controller Forum Notes (July 7–8, 2026) and HCF Update
1) 2025 Runway Incursion Data: While the total number of runway incursions (over 1,600) decreased by about 1%, "severe" (Category A & B) incursions increased by 44%. Please review HNL Airport Hotspots. Vigilance is imperative when operating in HNL’s complex Class B Airspace, particularly at these designated Hotspots. (Note: HNL Hotspots can be found at Daniel K. Inouye Airport Diagram at faa.gov).
2) Upcoming Events: Significant HNL South Ramp renovation near the T-Hangars is planned for the coming year, which will present operational challenges across multiple construction phases. Please review current NOTAMs for closures and expect unusual taxi instructions during construction. If there is any confusion, clarify immediately with Air Traffic.
3) Bird Strikes: Effective wildlife hazard mitigation relies on accurate, comprehensive data. If you experience—or even suspect—a bird or wildlife strike, report it immediately to State Ramp Control at (808) 836-6603. Even if there is no visible damage, please call it in and provide the following details:
Date and time
- Location (airport, runway, or GPS coordinates)
- Species or animal description
- Aircraft type and damage assessment
- Photos (if available)
4) Go-Around Procedures (Effective July 27, 2027): Aircraft executing a go-around at HNL will no longer be kept in the local traffic pattern; instead, all aircraft will be re-sequenced by HCF Approach. Please be familiar with all coded VFR departure procedures prior to every flight:
- Runway 4/8 Configuration:
- VFR: Expect to be issued the Redhill Departure.
- IFR: Expect radar vectors and an assigned altitude.
- Runway 22/26 Configuration:
- VFR: Expect to be issued the West Loch Departure.
- IFR: Expect radar vectors and an assigned altitude.
