Hurricane Helene-Disaster Relief Flights
This notice expired on
Thursday, October 31, 2024

In the aftermath of hurricane Helene there is an increased presence of unmanned aircraft (UA) commonly referred to as drones operating in Western North Carolina. The risk of collision is always greater at those altitudes where drones and manned aircraft share the same airspace. Drones typically fly at altitudes up to 400’ AGL but may occasionally operate above 400’ AGL depending upon the nature of their mission.

Many public safety organizations are operating drones for life-safety missions and may be anywhere up to 400’ AGL or higher. Be advised that drones are comparatively small and often blend in with the background; drone pilots may not identify other aircraft in time to safely maneuver out of the way.

Pilots are advised to remain vigilant at all altitudes to reduce the likelihood of a collision. Also, check Temporary Flight Restrictions (TFRs) before you fly at https://bit.ly/2NNkeOf.
