FAAST Blast — Week of Feb 20 – Feb 26, 2023
Biweekly FAA Safety Briefing News Update

New Rule to Improve Safety at Airports

A new rule from the FAA will help airports detect and mitigate safety problems before they result in accidents or incidents. The final rule requires certain airports to develop and implement a safety management system (SMS) faa.gov/airports/airport_safety/safety_management_systems/external

SMS programs have helped foster the safest era in commercial aviation history. Fundamental to the program is identifying risks and then taking steps to correct potential safety issues before they result in accidents or incidents.

The final rule applies to over 200 of America’s busiest commercial airports. Depending on the airport’s classification and operations, the timeline to fully implement SMS ranges from four to five and a half years. The
rule takes effect 60 days after publication in the Federal Register faa.gov/airports/airport_safety/safety_management_systems/external/airport_SMS_final_rule_draft.

Fly Safe — Transition Training

Just like switching between automatic and manual in a car, transitioning from one aircraft to a different one comes with unique challenges — even when you’re certificated to operate that specific category or class. What’s Your Type?

Interested in joining a club that could save you time, money, and possibly your life? Joining an aircraft type club can help you be more in tune with the performance and safety of your flying machine and can help you meet and network with like-minded individuals. Data also suggest that type club members are less likely to have an accident than their non-member colleagues. Learn more about the benefits of aircraft type clubs here http://bit.ly/3kgomIN.
