Some ATC facilities are operating with reduced hours due to the COVID19 pandemic. It is imperative to check NOTAMS to determine if there are changes to a facility's hours that might impact your flight. It is also possible for an ATC facility to close or go "ATC Zero" with little or no notice due to a COVID19 exposure within the facility.
As a reminder, when the tower is closed, ensure the correct, designated Common Traffic Advisory Frequency (CTAF) is used to carry out airport advisory practices. The CTAF is published in in the FAA Chart Supplement and is depicted on Approach Charts and VFR Aeronautical Charts.
When operating at an airport without an operating control tower:
- Be alert!
- Ensure you are using correct CTAF
- Look out and listen for other traffic to maintain situational awareness
- Self-announce position and intentions
Please see the references below for a comprehensive overview of operations at non-towered airports.
