Practice instrument approaches are conducted by VFR and IFR aircraft and are approved by ATC on a workload permitting basis. Aircraft conducting practice instrument approaches at all airports in the Houston terminal area are provided appropriate separation. VFR aircraft will be instructed to maintain VFR conditions. Controller responsibility for separation begins at the point where the approach clearance becomes effective and terminates at the missed approach point. Except for heavy aircraft and B757’s, 500 feet vertical separation may be applied between VFR aircraft and between a VFR and an IFR aircraft. A published missed approach is not automatically authorized in the approach clearance to a VFR aircraft, but may be approved if requested. Aircraft requesting IFR handling are encouraged to file an IFR flight plan in advance. Include your intentions and the local airports where approaches are requested in the remarks section. Practice instrument approaches may be requested with any Houston terminal area ATC facility. Pilots will be issued the appropriate Houston TRACON frequency.
