Biweekly FAA Safety Briefing News Update

FAA Transitions To Mandatory Use Of International Flight Plan

The FAA will transition to mandatory use of the international flight plan format for all IFR and VFR domestic and international civil flights on August 27, 2019. The change is part of an effort to modernize and streamline flight planning and supports the FAA’s NextGen initiatives. Several improvements to the international form make it easier and more intuitive for pilots to use and will increase safety, including an increase in the size of the departure and destination fields to allow a greater variety of entry types, including Special Flight Rules Area (SFRA) flight plans.

The international format will also allow for integration of Performance Based Navigation (PBN) and enhance air traffic control services by allowing for easier identification of equipage, which can make greater use of airspace. When using flight plan filing services, all features available today will be part of the new format and provide an additional level of detail required for deployment of the FAA’s NextGen technologies and procedures.

Please use the international format now. Simplified guidance on how to complete an international flight plan is available at bit.ly/2JiUkQN. Please contact Flight Service at 9-AWA-ATO-SYSOPS-FS@faa.gov if you have any questions.

FAA Forums at AirVenture a Huge Success

During this year’s EAA AirVenture in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, the FAA hosted more than 40 safety forums at the FAA’s Safety Center and at the AirVenture Seaplane Base. The forums attracted more than 3,800 attendees, a six-year attendance record! Nearly half of those in attendance also received WINGS and/or AMT Awards credit. If you weren’t able to attend or make it out to AirVenture this year, no worries. Many of the presentations were recorded and will be made available online at a later date. We’ll keep you posted in a future FAAST Blast.

Take a Hint

“There sure is a strong crosswind out there today.” How many of us pilots have heard something like this uttered just before we’re headed for a preflight? It might heed us well to pay greater attention to these subtle comments from fellow pilots. Those comments and suggestions may be a polite way of helping you avoid dangerous decisions in your own flying. For tips on how to best take a hint from fellow aviators, see Jason Blair’s article “[Other] Pilots Looking Out For You” in the July/August issue of FAA Safety Briefing at: https://adobe.ly/2G31CVC.
