FAAST Blast — Week of Oct 17, 2016 – Oct 23, 2016
Biweekly FAA Safety Briefing News Update

AD Issued for Certain Continental Engines

Last week the FAA issued an Airworthiness Directive (AD 2016-21-04) for certain Continental turbocharged TSIO-550 engines. The AD, which affects 1,307 engines on airplanes of U.S. registry, was issued to prevent failure of the oil cooler cross fitting. Click here for more.

DOT Bans Samsung Galaxy Note 7

The U.S. Department of Transportation has banned all Samsung Galaxy Note7 phones from airplanes. Individuals may not transport or ship a Samsung Galaxy Note 7 device on their person, in carry-on baggage, or in checked baggage on flights to, from, or within the United States. For additional information about safe travel with lithium batteries, visit the DOT Safe Travel Website at http://phmsa.dot.gov/safetravel/batteries and check out the article “Li-Ion Taming” in the Jan/Feb 2014 issue of FAA Safety Briefing.

Safety Enhancement Topic of the Month: Compliance Philosophy
Simply put, the goal of the FAA’s Compliance Philosophy is to identify safety issues that underlie deviations from standards and correct them as effectively, quickly, and efficiently as possible. Where appropriate, it emphasizes non-enforcement, or a “Compliance Action,” the FAA’s method for correcting unintentional deviations that come from things like flawed systems and procedures, simple mistakes, lack of understanding, or diminished skills. Which Airway is for You?
When people talk about careers in the aviation world, they almost always focus on two occupations: pilots and aviation maintenance technicians. But aviation is a wonderfully diverse world filled with careers you might not always hear about. In his article “The Airway Less Travelled,” FAA Safety Briefing Associate Editor James Williams examines a few examples of these alternate aviation careers, like aircraft dispatch, aviation meteorology, airport management, and others. To see if a less travelled airway might be for you, check out the Sep/Oct issue of FAA Safety Briefing at: www.faa.gov/news/safety_briefing.
