FAAST Blast — Week of Aug 22, 2016 – Aug 28, 2016
Biweekly FAA Safety Briefing News Update

FAA International Flight Plan Date Change

The transition to mandatory use of the International Flight Plan format for all domestic and international civil flights will occur in the first quarter of calendar year 2017. Moving the start date from October 1 gives Flight Service vendors more time to modify their software for exclusive use of the international format. The change is part of an effort by Flight Service to modernize and streamline delivery of services.

Guidance to the flying public and updates to all required publications will help ease the transition. You don’t have to wait, though – start using the international format now. The simplified guidance on how to complete an international flight plan is available at www.faa.gov/go/flightservice.

Rotorcraft Safety Conference
The FAA’s Rotorcraft Directorate is hosting its second International Rotorcraft Safety Conference from October 25-27, 2016, at the Hurst Conference Center near Ft. Worth, Texas. The goal of the conference is to help find ways to reduce the national helicopter accident rate and will feature presentations from industry and FAA leaders. This free event is open to the public. Here’s My Advice …

For the July/August 2016 issue of FAA Safety Briefing, we asked over a dozen CFIs of the Year to offer tips to pilots in training and their instructors. The response was overwhelming! Here’s one bit of sage advice offered by the 2001 CFI of the Year Phil Poynor: “Be on time and be prepared for every lesson. Most of learning to fly is between the ears, not between the clouds.” For more tips, see the article “Here’s My Advice …” at www.faa.gov/news/safety_briefing/2016/media/JulAug2016.pdf.
