FAA Safety Briefing Departments - July/August 2016
This notice expired on
Monday, September 19, 2016

The July/August 2016 issue of FAA Safety Briefing focuses on the world of student pilots and airmen-in-training. Building on our previous student pilot-themed editions in 2012 and 2014, this issue provides tips and resources for success in initial pilot certification. It also explores the new Airman Certification Standards (ACS) which begins rolling out this summer. The ACS lists the standards for what an applicant needs to know, consider, and do in order to pass both the knowledge test and the practical test for a certificate or rating.

In this issue’s Jumpseat department (p. 1), Flight Standards Service’s Director John Duncan discusses how concepts like ACS and Risk Based Decision Making (RBDM) can help our safety system move from reactive to proactive, while Checklist (p 27) explains how the new Airman Certification Standards (ACS) are designed to not only to change how we test airmen, but also how we train them with the intention of creating a better airman.

Federal Air Surgeon Dr. James Fraser addresses the misconceptions airmen have regarding how medications, both prescription and over-the-counter, can affect medical fitness in Aeromedical Advisory (p.5).

Nuts, Bolts, and Electrons (p.36) explores how the ACS process is being integrated with Aviation Maintenance Technician certification, while Angle of Attack (p 37) focuses on how the ACS treats the previous “special emphasis” items from the Practical Test Standards.
