FAAST Blast — Week of July 25, 2016 – July 31, 2016
Biweekly FAA Safety Briefing News Update

FAA Improves Runway Conditions Reporting

“Breaking Bad” is just a television show, but for a GA pilot, braking bad on a runway is a safety concern that the FAA looks to mitigate with the new standards for reporting runway conditions at U.S. airports during adverse weather conditions. Effective October 1, 2016, GA pilots, U.S. airports, airline flight crews, dispatchers, and air traffic controllers are required to report runway conditions using the new Takeoff and Landing Performance Assessment (TALPA) standards. Under TALPA, pilots will receive runway condition reports that directly relate to the way the pilot’s aircraft is expected to perform. Airport operators will assess runway surfaces and contaminants, and the pilot or dispatcher will consult the aircraft manufacturer data on the stopping performance for the specific airplane they are operating.

GA Award Winners Celebrated at AirVenture

Every year for more than 50 years, the General Aviation Awards program and the FAA have recognized aviation professionals for their contributions to GA in the fields of flight instruction, aviation maintenance/avionics, and safety. Recipients of the 2016 National General Aviation Awards are: Robert James Hepp – Certified Flight Instructor of the Year, Adrian Allen Eichhorn – Aviation Technician of the Year, and Richard Lawrence Martindell – FAA Safety Team (FAASTTeam) Representative of the Year.

FAA Great Lakes Division Manager Jim Gardner and General Aviation and Commercial Division Manager Jim Viola personally recognized the award winners this week at Airventure in Oshkosh, Wisc., and presented each with  a plaque. Administrator Huerta also recognized the recipients at his Meet the Administrator forum later in the day.

Learn more about the 2016 award winners in the July/August issue of FAA Safety Briefing magazine http://1.usa.gov/FAA_ASB. Nominations for the 2017 General Aviation Awards are already underway. See www.generalaviationawards.com/nominations for more information.
