#FlySafe Topic of the Month: Vmc and Angle of Attack Indicators
This notice expired on
Thursday, December 17, 2015

The FAA and general aviation (GA) group’s #FlySafe national safety campaign aims to educate the GA community on how to prevent Loss of Control (LOC) accidents with a series of monthly safety enhancement topics. This month’s topic deals with engine failure procedures for multi-engine aircraft and how angle of attack (AOA) indicator systems can help prevent stall/spin accidents.

The FAA recommends that pilots seek training on Vmc — the minimum control speed with critical engine inoperative — with a qualified flight instructor to improve your response to a power loss. The agency also encourages pilots to investigate equipping with an AOA indicator system. Design approval requirements for AOA systems have been simplified so that pilots can more easily add this valuable cockpit aid.

Background:

A key part of the General Aviation Joint Steering Committee’s (GAJSC) strategy to reduce GA fatal accidents has been to focus outreach on a set of specific safety enhancement (SE) topics based on accident casual factors. The group established these topics after studying and researching thousands of GA accident reports. They highlight one SE topic each month in a coordinated communications effort to the GA community. In June 2015, the GAJSC joined forces with the FAA to expand this safety awareness effort to start the #FlySafe campaign. The messages are aimed at conveying key teaching points and will include references to FAA handbooks and resources as well as existing articles on the subject.
