NOTICE ON ADIZ TRAINING
As you may have seen in the press, on July 5, the FAA published a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM) regarding Special Awareness Training for the Washington DC Metropolitan Area. In response to nearly 1,000 violations involving this airspace, the FAA proposes to add a new rule (14 CFR 91.161) that would require anyone who flies under Visual Flight Rules (VFR) within 100 nm of the DCA VOR/DME to complete special awareness training for the Washington, DC Metropolitan Area.
The training – now voluntary – is available online in the Aviation Learning Center at http://www.faasafety.gov, through a course titled “Navigating the DC ADIZ, TFRs, and Other Special Use Airspace.”
The proposed special awareness training requirement is a “one-time” obligation, so you do not need to take the training again if you have already completed this course. However, we strongly encourage any pilot who operates in, or near, this airspace to review the material periodically.
