Non-Towered Approaches - Best Practices
This notice expired on

The term "Best Practice" exists for a reason.

The Aeronautical Information Manual (AIM) outlines best practices for pilots, recommending entry at a 45-degree angle to the downwind leg of the traffic pattern, and also advised in the Airplane Flying Handbook. This approach offers numerous safety benefits. At Watsonville Airport (KWVI), a straight-in approach won't break any traffic pattern regulations. However, on a busy day, a straight-in approach could be seen as careless and reckless. That's why it's called a Best Practice!

Consult KWVI’s Chart Supplement, and if you want to follow best practices, enter the pattern at a 45-degree angle onto the downwind leg.
