Title:
Flying While Tired Distracted or Overconfident
Topic:
How Human Factors Quietly Derail Safety—And What Keeps Judgment Sharp
Date and Time:
Thursday, October 9, 2025, starting at 19:00 Eastern Daylight Time Download Calendar File
Speaker(s):
Robert Breaux, Ph.D., CFII
Brief Description:

FAA and NASA ASRS reports routinely cite human performance factors—including fatigue and distraction—as contributing causes in roughly 20% of general aviation incidents. Studies on pilot overconfidence show it correlates strongly with procedural shortcuts and missed risk cues. This session is built to confront cognitive biases that silently degrade flight safety, even on familiar routes.

In workshop format, the seminar will explore the subtle human factors that erode safety—even in familiar skies. Learn how fatigue, distraction, and cognitive bias sneak into pilot decision-making and how to spot & counter them early through examination of an actual NASA ASRS report.

Additional Event Information & Acknowledgement of Industry Sponsor(s):

This session dives deep into the human factors that quietly undermine pilot judgment. We'll explore how fatigue and distraction interfere with situational awareness and how overconfidence can lead even experienced aviators into dangerous assumptions. Drawing on NASA ASRS reports and GA accident data—where nearly 1 in 5 cite human performance issues—we’ll introduce practical self-check strategies and discuss ways to stay mentally sharp during routine and stressful flights alike.

- Recognize subtle signs of fatigue and distraction
- Understand overconfidence biases in aviation
- Use self-check tools to assess fitness to fly
