Title:
Foreign Object Damage and Tool Control
Topic:
Foreign Object Damage (FOD) Prevention and Tool Control Practices in Aircraft Maintenance.
Speaker(s):
Richard Jeffs, FAASTeam Program Manager
Brief Description:
Foreign object damage (FOD) is any damage to aircraft, personnel, or equipment caused by any loose object. These loose objects can be anything, such as broken runway concrete, shop towels, safety wire, etc. These hazards can be reduced, however, by the establishment of an active FOD prevention program.
Lost tools have often resulted in embarrassment and expense, and sometimes in tragedy. The primary objective of a tool control program is to substantially reduce or eliminate aircraft accidents or incidents, including possible loss of life or damage to equipment, caused by the improper accountability of tools.
