Why is there such a difference between a slip and a skid? In both scenarios, the airplane is in uncoordinated flight. If both slips and skids are conditions of uncoordinated flight, are they both equally dangerous? While we try to avoid uncoordinated flight in general, we practice one of these two during flight training. It is also used for crosswind correction during landing. The other one, however, we should always avoid. Which one is worse — a slip or a skid? This presentation will show the aerodynamic differences between slips and skids and the importance of teaching and understanding these variances to prevent loss of control in flight, especially during the base to final turn.

Dr. Anderson is an Associate Professor of Aeronautical Science in the College of Aviation at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University (ERAU).  Dr. Anderson holds a Ph.D. in Aviation from ERAU, she graduated with the first group of Ph.D. graduates at ERAU in December of 2013, and became the first woman with a Ph.D. in Aviation.  Dr. Anderson also holds a Master in Business Administration in Aviation from ERAU, and a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Los Andes University in Bogota, Colombia. In addition, Dr. Anderson holds an ATP and Commercial Pilot certificates in single engine, multi-engine, instrument airplanes, gliders and seaplanes; CFI in gliders, Instrument, single and multi-engine airplanes. Dr. Anderson has over 4,500 hours of flight time, and over 3,000 hours of flight instruction that includes flight instruction in gliders, tailwheel and aerobatic airplanes.  Dr. Anderson is very passionate about promoting aviation, aerospace and STEM education among young students, especially women; she spends most of her free time volunteering for recreational aviation organizations.   Dr. Anderson also has over 30 years of experience in General Aviation in the U.S. and internationally as an aircraft owner, operator, flight instructor and volunteer of many Aviation Organizations.
