Title:
AirVenture 2026 Forum - How to fly ODPs and SIDs
Topic:
This presentation covers visibility requirements, increased climb gradients, and obstacle avoidance routes.
Date and Time:
Friday, July 24, 2026, starting at 10:15 Central Daylight Time Download Calendar File
Speaker(s):
Ed Verville - CFI, DPE, TCE, APD
Brief Description:

Many pilots struggle with Obstacle Departure Procedures and Standard Instrument Departures during their Instrument Rating or CFI-Instrument Airplane practical tests. This presentation will show how to comply with visibility requirements, increased climb gradients, and obstacle avoidance routes. It will also describe the VCOA procedure (how to visually climb over an airport), and how to avoid the “low, close-in obstacles” that are not in the published procedures. Instrument training focuses a lot on how to get down from instrument conditions, but we also need to know how to avoid terrain and obstacle while departing an airport and climbing to a safe altitude.
