Title:
Pilot Talk Lessons from Steamboat
Topic:
Lessons to be learned from the recent tragedy involving an Epic E1000 at Steamboat Springs (KSBS)
Date and Time:
Wednesday, March 18, 2026, starting at 17:30 Mountain Daylight Time Download Calendar File
Speaker(s):
Caitlin McCarthy, CFII
Brief Description:

Many of you have already heard about the recent tragedy involving an Epic E1000 at Steamboat Springs (KSBS).  It has prompted much discussion within the flight training and General Aviation communities. We feel it is important to address this accident with you, our local pilot community, because the apparent circumstances of the accident could happen to any of us.

Join Sun Valley Aviators instructors, Caitlin McCarthy and Spencer Gaudreau, on the evening of March 18th from 5:30-7:30pm for a discussion of the event, a textbook, albeit devastating, illustration of the classic "Swiss Cheese" model of accident causation.  Our goal is not to speculate, but to reflect on the operational and human factors lessons that such events highlight.  After discussing the lessons learned from the accident, you will be given the opportunity to fly the approach under the exact conditions present on the night of the accident in our Redbird AATD flight simulator.
