Tim Thompson began flying at age 16 and earned his private pilot certificate at 17. After college, he was commissioned in the United States Marine Corps and attended Navy Flight School where he earned his wings and went on to fly the F/A-18 Hornet. During his time in the Marine Corps, he qualified as an Air Combat Tactics Instructor and served as an instructor in the F/A-18 Fleet Replacement Squadron.
Following his military service, he joined FedEx, beginning as a Flight Engineer on the Boeing 727 and DC-10. After upgrading to a pilot seat, he flew the 727, 757, MD-10, and MD-11, and ultimately retired after 26 years as a Captain on the Boeing 767. Over the course of his career, including twelve years flying hang gliders, one constant across every aircraft he has flown has been the importance of understanding and managing energy. Today, he continues to fly for pleasure in his Bristell aircraft based at KINF Airport
