Introduction

While Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) facilities are not considered dangerous industries, its workers are subject to various physical and chemical exposures. Using a historical approach, Dr. Allen, a physician, provides an overview of past exposures. While these exposures had immediate consequences, he introduces the concept of Latent Medical and Environment Conditions (LMEC). LMEC are a red or weak link in the accident chain. Under specific situations, LMEC may contribute to a maintenance incident.

Using a “shop floor” approach Dr. Allen discusses poorly designed work processes that created LMEC. Published studies of investigated work processes illustrate how LMEC may originate. Unlike the historical examples, these LMECs originated from failure to follow safety protocol for known toxic agents. Another example of LMEC are the chronic diseases that workers bring to the hangar. These medical conditions also contribute to LMEC. Because of the aging of the population, chronic deceases are common in the workforce.

Health influences productivity.  Absenteeism due to poor health is an obvious cause of lost productivity.

Upon completion of this course, students will gain an appreciation for possible exposures in the MRO industry, their medical consequences, and preventive measures to limit these exposures. Insight into LMEC allows the student to apply the examples presented in the historical and investigated case studies to their own work processes.

COURSE STRUCTURE

This course should take about 1 hour to complete.

Instruction is based on a 45-minute video presentation. At the end of the course is an online exam.

The exam is a multiple choice and must be taken in a single session. The exam is 10 questions chosen randomly. A passing score of 100% is required for a certificate.

COURSE CREDIT

To receive appropriate course credit for this course, you must:

  • Have an account on FAASafety.gov
  • Be logged into that account
  • Be enrolled in the course
  • You must visit each chapter of the course using the navigation bars at the top or bottom of each screen and complete all the course material found on each.

NOTE: Some links may take you to other sites or open windows on top of the course window. You must return to this course on FAASafety.gov to complete the exam. This might be as simple as closing all the additional windows. However, you may need to return to FAASafety.gov, log in again, and then "continue" the course from the Course List.

  • Upon completing the review section, the Exam-sd.JPGbutton will turn blue, Exam.JPGindicating you are ready to start the examination. Upon successful completion of the exam, you are given the appropriate course credit automatically.
