There is a cost for this activity
Who this is for: Master-level instrument pilots who want to practice winter IFR mountain operations
on the KSLC–KSUN route, with emphasis on icing, terrain, and limited alternate options.
CFII-led, LOFT-style IFR session in our FAA-approved G1000 NXi Advanced Aviation Training Device (AATD, non-motion).
This
Master-tier scenario recreates the KSLC → KSUN route, focusing on winter operations, mountain weather, and
alternate planning in high-altitude terrain with limited diversion options.
Scenario goal: Build proficiency in winter IFR mountain flying — emphasizing cold-weather
performance, terrain avoidance, and fuel/alternate strategy when options are constrained.
What you’ll practice:
- IFR clearance and departure from Salt Lake City with high-altitude performance considerations.
(FAA-H-8083-16B,
Ch 1)
- RNAV transitions into Sun Valley with terrain-driven constraints and mountain navigation accuracy.
(FAA-H-8083-15B, Ch 9; FAA-H-8083-16B, Ch 2)
- Cold-weather and winter-weather operations including icing, contamination, and performance degradation.
(FAA-H-8083-15B, Ch 11; FAA-H-8083-16B, Ch 1)
- Decision-making with limited alternates and diversion planning in constrained mountain terrain.
(FAA-H-8083-16B,
Ch 1)
- Automation management, COMM radio coordination, and crew discipline under high workload. (FAA-H-8083-15B, Ch
8)
- Executing RNAV approaches to landing with terrain awareness and stabilized approach discipline.
(FAA-H-8083-15B,
Ch 10; FAA-H-8083-16B, Ch 4)
What you’ll walk away with:
- Greater confidence managing winter IFR mountain profiles with realistic icing and performance constraints.
- Experience making diversion and alternate decisions when terrain and weather severely limit options.
- Refined automation and crew-style communication skills applicable to real-world winter IFR operations.
Syllabi and credits:
- S-MF1-W-1.0-01 — Operating on and around airports/heliports/seaplane bases (1 Master Flight
credit).
- S-MF2-W-1.0-01 — Flight operations away from airports/heliports/seaplane bases (1 Master
Flight credit).
How this Activity satisfies each syllabus:
Master Flight Topic 1 — Airports (S-MF1-W-1.0-01)
- Brief and execute IFR departure from KSLC with high-altitude performance and cold-weather considerations.
(FAA-H-8083-16B, Ch 1)
- Plan and execute RNAV arrivals into KSUN with terrain-driven constraints and precise altitude/speed compliance.
(FAA-H-8083-16B, Ch 3 & 4)
- Conduct stabilized RNAV approaches to landing in mountain terrain with proper configuration and energy management.
(FAA-H-8083-15B, Ch 10; FAA-H-8083-16B, Ch 4)
Master Flight Topic 2 — En Route & Approaches (S-MF2-W-1.0-01)
- Navigate RNAV transitions into Sun Valley with terrain-driven constraints and maintain navigation accuracy.
(FAA-H-8083-15B, Ch 9; FAA-H-8083-16B, Ch 2)
- Practice cold-weather and winter-weather operations including icing considerations and performance planning.
(FAA-H-8083-15B, Ch 11; FAA-H-8083-16B, Ch 1)
- Execute decision-making with limited alternates and develop diversion strategies in constrained mountain terrain.
(FAA-H-8083-16B, Ch 1)
- Manage automation, coordinate radio communications, and maintain crew discipline under high workload.
(FAA-H-8083-15B, Ch 8)
Completion Standard: All tasks are performed to Instrument Rating ACS (FAA-S-ACS-8C) standards for
risk management, aircraft control, and instrument procedures. The Activity is considered complete when the pilot can
consistently brief, fly, and debrief the profile to the applicable ACS standard, regardless of time.

How to book:
- Pick your session length. Master-level LOFT scenarios work best in a 3-hour
session to allow time for comprehensive briefing, execution, and debrief.
- Select date & time. Use the calendar to choose a convenient slot. Instructor schedules may
vary (active pilots).
- Confirm your booking details. Enter your information, review the session summary, and submit the
online form to reserve your time.
