There is a cost for this activity
Who this is for: Master-level instrument pilots who want a challenging mountain IFR LOFT on the
KDEN–KJAC route with a focus on terrain, RNAV arrivals, and diversion strategy.
CFII-led, LOFT-style IFR session in our FAA-approved G1000 NXi Advanced Aviation Training Device (AATD, non-motion).
This
Master-tier scenario recreates the KDEN → KJAC route, highlighting mountain environment operations,
high-altitude departures, and demanding RNAV arrivals into Jackson Hole.
Scenario goal: Expose pilots to terrain-driven procedures, complex RNAV approaches, and real-world
diversion and fuel planning in high-density mountain operations.
What you’ll practice:
- High-altitude IFR departure procedures from Denver with terrain awareness and climb gradient planning.
(FAA-H-8083-16B, Ch 1)
- RNAV transitions via XXWNG into KJAC with terrain-driven constraints and navigation accuracy. (FAA-H-8083-15B,
Ch 9; FAA-H-8083-16B, Ch 2)
- RNAV approaches into Jackson Hole with terrain considerations and stabilized approach discipline.
(FAA-H-8083-15B, Ch 10; FAA-H-8083-16B, Ch 4)
- Holding procedures and reroutes in constrained airspace with terrain avoidance. (FAA-H-8083-15B, Ch 10;
FAA-H-8083-16B, Ch 2)
- Diversion decision-making and advanced fuel planning in mountain terrain. (FAA-H-8083-16B, Ch 1)
- Automation management and risk assessment in high-altitude mountain IFR operations. (FAA-H-8083-15B, Ch
8)
What you’ll walk away with:
- Greater confidence handling high-altitude departures and terrain-driven RNAV arrivals in demanding mountain
environments.
- Practical experience balancing terrain, weather, and fuel constraints when evaluating diversion options.
- Refined automation and risk management habits suitable for advanced mountain IFR operations and LOFT evaluations.
Syllabi and credits:
- S-MF1-W-1.0-01 — Operating on and around airports/heliports/seaplane bases (1 Master Flight
credit).
- S-MF2-W-1.0-01 — Flight operations away from airports/heliports/seaplane bases (1 Master
Flight credit).
How this Activity satisfies each syllabus:
Master Flight Topic 1 — Airports (S-MF1-W-1.0-01)
- Brief and execute high-altitude IFR departure procedures from KDEN with terrain awareness and climb gradient
calculations. (FAA-H-8083-16B, Ch 1)
- Plan and execute RNAV arrivals into KJAC with terrain-driven constraints and precise altitude/speed compliance.
(FAA-H-8083-16B, Ch 3 & 4)
- Conduct stabilized RNAV approaches to landing in mountain terrain with proper configuration and energy management.
(FAA-H-8083-15B, Ch 10; FAA-H-8083-16B, Ch 4)
Master Flight Topic 2 — En Route & Approaches (S-MF2-W-1.0-01)
- Navigate RNAV transitions with terrain-driven constraints and maintain navigation accuracy throughout the route.
(FAA-H-8083-15B, Ch 9; FAA-H-8083-16B, Ch 2)
- Execute holding procedures and manage reroutes in constrained mountain airspace with terrain avoidance.
(FAA-H-8083-15B, Ch 10; FAA-H-8083-16B, Ch 2)
- Practice diversion decision-making and advanced fuel planning in mountain terrain with limited alternates.
(FAA-H-8083-16B, Ch 1)
- Manage automation and assess risks in high-altitude mountain IFR operations. (FAA-H-8083-15B, Ch 8)
Completion Standard: All tasks are performed to Instrument Rating ACS (FAA-S-ACS-8C) standards for
risk management, aircraft control, and instrument procedures. The Activity is considered complete when the pilot can
consistently brief, fly, and debrief the profile to the applicable ACS standard, regardless of time.

How to book:
- Pick your session length. Master-level LOFT scenarios work best in a 3-hour
session to allow time for comprehensive briefing, execution, and debrief.
- Select date & time. Use the calendar to choose a convenient slot. Instructor schedules may
vary (active pilots).
- Confirm your booking details. Enter your information, review the session summary, and submit the
online form to reserve your time.
