CFII-led, LOFT-style instrument session in an FAA-approved Advanced Aviation Training Device (AATD, non-motion). Designed for GA pilots who need to maintain or regain instrument currency under 14 CFR §61.57(c).

Scenario:
LOFT #2: KBZN → KGPI. It’s mid-January in the Rockies. After diverting into Bozeman due to icing conditions, you and two friends are continuing to Glacier Park (KGPI). A car service is scheduled to meet you for a glacier tour, adding time pressure to the decision-making. The aircraft is a Cessna T206 with FIKI equipment. Includes pre-brief (30 min), AATD session (2.0 hrs), and post-flight debrief (30 min).

What we do in the AATD:

  • Three instrument approaches at KGPI
  • Tracking and intercepting courses
  • Holding procedures
  • Unusual attitude recovery (IFR)
  • ATC communications and checklist discipline
  • G1000 monitoring and cross-check
  • Automation management

Briefing focus (before engine start):

  • Weather & alternate planning – How do AIRMETs, PIREPs, and TAFs affect your route choice?
  • Icing risk – How do FIKI limitations shape your planning and alternate strategy?
  • Route & terrain – What terrain or airspace considerations drive your altitude selection?
  • Fuel & endurance – With 3.5 hours on board, how do you plan for reserve and possible holds?

In-flight focus:

  • Decision-making – Under pressure from weather and passengers, how do you balance safety vs. schedule?
  • Situational awareness – How do you track icing layers, terrain, and procedure limits in IMC?
  • Communication – What techniques help manage ATC when requesting deviations or changes?
  • Monitor & cross-check – How do you verify FMS entries and automation modes against raw data?
  • Workload management – What tasks can you front-load to stay ahead in the terminal environment?
  • Automation discipline – How do you ensure autopilot/flight director use is appropriate for each phase?

Scenario cues:

  • Winter operations with active icing potential
  • A departure requiring careful FMS programming
  • Weather at destination trending lower than forecast
  • Passenger time pressure influencing decision-making

GA-focused instruction with airline-informed discipline: standardization (SOP), concise callouts, stabilized-approach gates, energy & automation management, and efficient avionics workflow—assessed to the FAA Instrument ACS; airport ops to Private ACS as trained (this is not Part 121 training).

Evaluation standard (applied by your instructor): Assessed to Instrument ACS; airport ops to Private ACS as trained.
