The AOPA Air Safety Institute’s Focused Flight Review profiles present a dynamic, three-step scenario-based training opportunity for pilots to complete a flight review in a systematic yet engaging and flexible way.
The “IFR Proficiency” profile includes emphasis on safely operating IFR and responding to abnormal and emergency situations in instrument meteorologic conditions (IMC). Additionally, this profile includes all areas of operation and tasks required for an instrument proficiency check (IPC) per FAR 61.57(d).
In the first step, the pilot and flight instructor will set goals and expectations, assign any self-study materials, and select a challenging cross-country route to be planned as part of the scenario. Flight instructors may assign their own route or utilize one of the sample routes provided. In the second step, the pilot and instructor will “chair-fly” the flight to review a wide range of topics from regulations to airspace to weather. Step three is an exciting flight that uses a navigation exercise to lead into maneuvers, tasks, and emergency procedures. Following the flight, the pilot and instructor will conduct a detailed debrief and develop the pilot’s proficiency plan of action.
