Description:

This 1-hour seminar will focus on the wreckage and the 10 trips the International Society of Air Safety Investigators made to a B-24 crash site from 1993 -2016 to analyze the crash, and how the site has evolved over the years.  Professor Waldock will explain how the crash happened and aspects of the crew members.  The B-24 crew was on a night navigation mission from Kirtland Field, Albuquerque to Bakersfield, CA and back.  During the dark, moonless, night the crew flew off course and ended up 15 miles north of where they were supposed to be.  Cruising at 11,000 ft they flew directly into the side of Humphrey's Peak (12,633ft high).  Some of Professor Waldock's research will provide aspects of the personal effects the crash had one of the student pilot's family members.  Lack of  maintaining situational awareness is a major contributor to CFIT and definitely part of the crash.
