"D Day Squadron - Flying 75 Year Old Aircraft Across The Atlantic" with Bill Tymczyszyn

A Ventura County 99s Pilot Proficiency Class

Tuesday Feb 18, 2020 7:00-8:00 pm at the Aviation Museum of Santa Paula

On June 5, 2019 approximately half a million people from around the globe met in Normandy to celebrate the 75th Anniversary of D-Day.   Bill Tymczyszyn will share the story of the D-Day Squadron, re-mapping the journey he took in the Flabob Express DC 3 - the dream, preparation, crossing the Atlantic and seven countries - and back.  The flight was a living history adventure to honor D-Day and its veterans and the 70th anniversary of the Berlin Airlift.

Every flight in a DC-3 is an adventure, but to fly from Riverside to Europe and back, and do it with 14 other 75-year-old DC-3s and C-47s was a remarkable accomplishment.  Bill Tymczyszyn, one of the pilots on this historic mission, will share insights into what it took to mitigate the risks and tackle the challenges, including: increasing aircraft reliability, insuring spare parts and avgas availability, flight crew training including formation, emergency equipment, and, of course, planning for a journey through an ever-changing and often daunting weather environment – the skies of the North Atlantic Ocean

Instructor:  Bill Tymczyszyn, ATP, CFI, CFII, MEI, Rotorcraft-Helicopter, is a retired airline captain (38 years at Continental and United).  He is a 53-year GA pilot, an FAA Designated Engineering Represntative (DER), a Flight Test PIlot and Flight Analyst.  Bill is a member of the Society of Experimental Test Pilots and is based at Torrance Airport (KTOA) where he keeps his Beech Travelair, Bellanca Decathlon, and 1931 Buhl Bull Pup.  He has a B.S. in aerospace engineering from the University of Washington in Seattle. Bill was one of the pilots who flew a DC-3 in the D-Day Squadron across the Atlantic to commemorate the 75th anniversary of D-Day.

This program is one of a series in the Ventura County 99s 20th Annual Pilot Proficiency Classes, an annual series of approximately 20-25  seminars and programs from February to May. There is a fee for all classes except this class and the Feb 19th Tom Morgenfeld "Reflections of a Test Pilot" class.  Please go to our registration web site at http://www.vc99sclasses.com for additional information about each class and the instructors.
