Title:
ACS - Understanding the new Airman Certification Standards - ACS GOING LIVE THIS JUNE 15th!
Topic:
The ACS are here. The PTS have been replaced effective June 15, 2016! Learn the important details.
Date and Time:
Monday, June 20, 2016, starting at 19:00 Eastern Daylight Time Download Calendar File
Speaker(s):
Eric Crump, Director Polk State Aerospace, CFI
Brief Description:

BACKGROUND: Since September 2011, the FAA has been working closely with a diverse group of aviation community stakeholders convened to help the agency improve the testing/training standards, guidance and test development/test management components of the airman certification process. Participants have developed the Airman Certification Standards (ACS) framework as a way to improve airman training and testing. The ACS provides an integrated, holistic system that clearly aligns airman testing with certification standards and guidance.

Built on the existing Practical Test Standards (PTS), which explicitly define the performance metrics for each flight proficiency element listed in 14 CFR, the ACS approach enhances the PTS by defining the specific elements, aeronautical knowledge, and risk management needed to support each Area of Operation/Task. By presenting the elements of knowledge, skill, and risk management in the integrated ACS format, the ACS better serves the applicant, the instructor, and the evaluator. It will also enable the FAA to clearly align knowledge/skill performance standards, guidance, and test materials.

The PRIVATE PILOT and INSTRUMENT RATING ACS will be live and their use is mandatory beginning June 15, 2016.

The ACS is designed to provide clear information about what an applicant must know, consider, and do in order to qualify for a specific certificate or rating. It provides a framework that integrates and aligns standards, guidance, and testing for airman certification. The purpose of this event is to provide information to applicants, students, instructors and evaluators such as designated pilot examiners (DPEs) about using the ACS in the teaching, training and testing phases of airman certification. Our speaker, Eric Crump knows the new ACS as he was an integral part of the process and industry group which helped create it.

FAASAFETY.GOV is offering an online primer specific to this event. WINGS credit is also available for this primer as well! The ACS primer may be found at: https://www.faasafety.gov/gslac/ALC/CourseLanding.aspx?cID=449 .

In addition, FAASAFETY.GOV has made available an excellent online Q&A to help all stakeholders better understand this new tool for improving not only the standards but in the process of doing so enhancing safety as well. The Q&A listing may be found at: https://www.faasafety.gov/files/notices/2015/Jun/ACS_FAQs_for_Applicants_CFIs_DPEs_6-17-15.pdf

This event is designed to be an interactive audience experience. PLEASE bring your questions and participate in the discussion!
