Title:
Putting Professionalism Back in The Commercial Certificate
Topic:
Due to changing requirements, the commercial certificate is on the way to becoming 'Private Pilot 2.0.'
Date and Time:
Sunday, October 26, 2025, starting at 20:00 Eastern Daylight Time (17:00 PDT; 18:00 MDT; 19:00 CDT; 14:00 HST; 16:00 AKDT; 17:00 Arizona; Monday, October 27, 2025 00:00 GMT)
Speaker(s):
John Dorcey (MCFI) and David St. George (DPE)
Brief Description:
Commercial pilot standards were once +/- 50 feet on every maneuver (not just slow flight) and were required to be flown in a retractable (complex) aircraft (as was CFI). These two requirements went away and the popularity of Performing the Duties of PIC [PDPIC - CFR 61.51(e)(1)(iv) – changed 08/21/2009] means that the previously challenging (and skill building) commercial solo time is no longer required (and seldom flown). Could the 10 hours of "complex" (now mostly useless TAA) be better assigned to learning tailwheel, glider, UPRT, or seaplane to build additional piloting skills? Share your comments HERE (The commercial certificate used to be called a "rudder rating" since it taught precise aircraft control and smooth execution.)
