Extended Envelope Training (EET) expands a pilot's "comfort zone" and is an antidote to Loss of Control- Inflight (LOC-I) - the most common cause of fatal accidents. LOC-I is usually the last link in an accident chain that involves a pilot forced out of their "comfort zone." A pilot's "comfort zone" gets smaller over time with automated flight and passenger missions - when did you last do a power-on stall? Take-Off and Turn-Out is where 90% of pattern accidents happen (not base-to-final). EET restores your maneuvering confidence with "eyes out, yank and bank flying!"

LOC-I may also result from inadequate preflight, poor decision-making, or just a surprise events like weather or air traffic conflict. The "startle response" of an unfamiliar attitude leads to less effective pilot functioning (or complete lock up). EET adds a larger margin of pilot safety. Comfort and control in a larger pilot envelope improves your everyday flying.

EET can also be a perfect segue into a full Upset Prevention and Recovery Training (UPRT) course in an aerobatic airplane. EET is flown in a normal category aircraft with a local instructor. UPRT is usually in a fully aerobatic plane and requires a greater commitment of resources - well worth it. Thank you to Rich Stowell for being available to assist in this presention on this and answer questions. HIs website is a treasure trove of aviation wisdom.
Extended Envelope Training was originally developed as a method of "tuning up" pilots in flight training after their instrument training (40 hours of standard-rate turns and super-smooth flying) EET requires "eyes outside, yank and bank flying. This was designed as an antidote to the "compressed comfort zone of IFR and "automated control." It is flown in a normal category flight trainer in your local environment and should be only flown with an experienced veteran instructor who is comfortable with full control flying.

SAFE CFI-PRO™ was derived from an FAA FSDO program that reduced flight training accidents by 60% in only two years! This program succeeded by requiring only one day of additional training for all new CFIs. These proven CFI techniques accelerate a new educator's abilities from "good to great" by sharing master instructor wisdom with new educators (mentoring). The previous SAFE CFI-PRO™ presentations are on the SAFE YouTube Channel.
SAFE (The Society of Aviation and Flight Educators) is an educational not-for-profit (501-c-3) professional organization with the mission of improving the aviation educational process thereby exponentially elevating pilot performance and aviation safety. Our major sponsor, ForeFlight, generously provides 1/3 off subscriptions for all SAFE pilot members. The free "SAFE Toolkit App" has resources for CFIs, pilots and even flight test applicants (Check-Ride Ready™).
