Whether you fly for recreation (fun) or for commercial purposes, learn where you can fly your sUAS close to home.  Guest speaker Eric Hanscom has been flying in little-known areas of east San Diego and Imperial Counties for 6 years and has suggestions, tips and guidance to find beautiful places to fly while staying safe and legal.  Highlights of Eric's presentation include Borrego Springs, Salvation Mountain, The Official Center of the World, and Coyote's UFO Retrieval and Repair Service.

Eric Hanscom is a patent and trademark attorney at InterContinental IP, a California-based law firm. Eric graduated with High Honors with two majors from U.C. Santa Barbara, and was Chief Managing Editor of the International and Comparative Law Review at Hastings College of the Law. He has spoken at a variety of conferences in the United States, Europe and Asia, taught numerous MCLE’s, and was a featured speaker on drone law to the Intellectual Property Section of California State Bar.  

Eric is also very active in the drone community.  He has been a Parrot Bebop Ambassador since 2014, and was the #1 Rated Top Pilot in Dronestagram for over a year stretching from January of 2016 to April of 2017. He is an active participant in SkyPixel, Travel by Drone, Travel With Drone, and Dronestagram - over 1,000,000 views just on Dronestagram - and is a past winner of DJI’s Personal Stories 2015 video contest and Dronestagram’s 2016 photo contest. His drone footage has appeared on CNN, City of Bristol website, Desert Times, and other media, and his picture “Paddleboard into the Sunset” was selected by DJI for its webpage. Eric has written articles published in numerous magazines and other media, including Flyte, Camera, Action, and CNN, and he is the only drone photographer to be selected for the AUVSI centerspread two times.

Eric is an internationally sought speaker on drone-related intellectual property issues, his “Ladder Side of Drones” project in Thailand using drones to perform inspection of Buddhist Temples, and his work using drones to document environmental changes in the Salton Sea.  

On a personal basis, in addition to being a Life Mensa Member, he has been a U.S., European, and three-time World Champion kayaker, and still surfs and kayaks. He currently splits time between his house in Carlsbad, California, and Thai-West Resort, a beachfront resort on Koh Siboya Island near Krabi, Thailand, that he owns with his wife.

Desi Ekstein, an Adjunct Instructor of Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) also known as Drones.  She is known in the Unmanned Aviation Industry as “Drone Diva Desi”. She is an FAA Certified 107 Remote Pilot in Command (RPIC), Lead FAASTeam Representative and DronePro in San Diego. She is an AUVSI San Diego Board member as well as a AUVSI TOP Level 3 pilot. She is a sUAS Operations instructor at TCI MiraCosta College. Desi is also involved with many STEM/STEAM and other outreach programs such as, Elementary Science Institute (EIS) “Girls Take Flight” as part of a young female STEM program.
