This informal roundtable will explore the opportunities and challenges of returning to flight instruction after pursuing another career, whether in aviation or another industry. Participants will discuss rebuilding proficiency, navigating regulatory and technological changes, balancing instruction with other professional commitments, and drawing on experiences gained outside the cockpit. Attendees are encouraged to share their own perspectives, ask questions, and connect with others who have made—or are considering—a return to flight instruction.

A pilot for more than 38 years, Miller has served as a flight instructor for the past 17 years. After retiring from a software management career five years ago, he began an encore career as chief flight instructor at Lunken Flight Training Center, which recently attained 141 Self Examining Authority at historic Lunken Airport in Cincinnati, Ohio. He instructs in Cessna 172s and multiple private client aircraft, and has experience in 25 aircraft types. For the past 18 years, Miller has owned a 1961 Beechcraft Debonair.

This presentation is offered during the 2026 ASCEND Flight Training Summit.

FAA WINGS preregistration is not required for activities offered during ASCEND.
