Title:
NAFI 2026 - Energy Management - How to Teach a Stabilized Approach
Topic:
Learn Stabilized Approach & Energy Management Concepts with Recommendations on Teaching Techniques & Risk Mitigation Strategies
Date and Time:
Saturday, July 25, 2026, starting at 11:00 Central Daylight Time Download Calendar File
Speaker(s):
Fred Sweet
Brief Description:

The importance of a stabilized approach to landing has been recognized as foundational to consistent and safe landings. The FAA has defined a stabilized approach to landing using data from business aviation and transport category aircraft. Industry standards require commercial operators to develop detailed performance criteria and SOP for crews to consistently achieve stabilized approaches. Problematic is the lack of specific training guidance for general aviation to achieve these same results. The FAA Airplane Flying Handbook presents concepts of energy management but lacks specific techniques and applications of how to train pilots. This presentation explores stabilized approach and energy management concepts with practical recommendations on instructional techniques and risk management strategies.
