Title:
NAFI 2026 - Legally Right Fatally Wrong - The Hidden Dangers Inside the Rules
Topic:
Developing Habits That Prevent You From Being Both Legally Right and Dangerously Negligent
Date and Time:
Monday, July 20, 2026, starting at 11:00 Central Daylight Time Download Calendar File
Speaker(s):
Brian Schiff
Brief Description:

Pilots work hard to stay current, compliant, and “by the book"—yet accident reports and enforcement cases are full of pilots who did exactly that and still ended up in a disaster or legal trouble. This presentation examines how strictly following the rules can gradually lead you into operational situations that are legally acceptable but tactically dangerous. Through real-world scenarios, we will examine traps such as flying to legal weather minimums, stretching fuel within regulatory limits, operating at the edge of personal minimums, and trusting training checkboxes rather than genuine proficiency and airmanship. I will also explore how these same “legal” decisions impact outcomes with investigators, insurers, and attorneys. Attendees will leave with a practical framework for going beyond mere compliance: recognizing when the law says “OK,” but risk management should say “No,” and developing habits that prevent you from being both legally compliant and dangerously negligent.
