Title:
NAFI 2025 - Enhancing Single-Pilot Safety Through Risk Management - At the PPC Education Center
Topic:
Solo, Not Alone: Enhancing Single-Pilot Safety Through Risk Management, CRM, and Cockpit Technology
Date and Time:
Friday, July 25, 2025, starting at 14:00 Central Daylight Time Download Calendar File
Speaker(s):
Chris Bogan
Brief Description:

Today’s GA cockpits offer more tools than ever before—but leveraging them safely requires more than just proficiency with buttons and screens. We’ll explore how single-pilot operators can apply practical Risk Management and CRM principles using modern technology, from EFBs to in-cockpit ADS-B traffic and weather tools. Emphasis will be placed on integrating automation and situational awareness tools to reduce workload without fostering complacency. We'll break down decision-making frameworks and highlight real-world examples where poor risk assessment—not lack of skill—was the root of accidents. This session is ideal for active pilots flying VFR or IFR who want to elevate their cockpit decision-making and risk awareness using both human and tech resources.

PRESENTED DURING THE EAA AIRVENTURE FLY-IN.  NO FEE FOR THE NAFI PRESENTATIONS, BUT AN ENTRANCE FEE IS REQUIRED BY EAA AIRVENTURE TO ENTER THE GROUNDS.

Chris Bogan is a Certified Flight Instructor (CFI) based at Houston Executive Airport (TME) in Texas, where he instructs with both the US Flight Club and Executive Flight School. He works with pilots flying Piper Archers, Saratogas, and Cherokee II aircraft across club and school locations at TME, Ellington Field (EFD), and Georgetown (GTU). Chris trains a wide spectrum of aviators—from brand-new students to seasoned airline pilots transitioning into complex aircraft—with an emphasis on real-world safety, sound aeronautical decision-making, and maintaining proficiency beyond the minimums. With a “day job” in technology, Chris often uses general aviation for work travel, bringing a practical perspective to every training session.
