Title:
NAFI 2025 - Five Weather Rules of Thumb - At the PPC Education Center
Topic:
Rules of Thumb That Can Have Serious Implications
Date and Time:
Thursday, July 24, 2025, starting at 14:00 Central Daylight Time Download Calendar File
Speaker(s):
Dr. Scott Dennstaedt
Brief Description:

Many flight instructors teach their students various aviation “rules of thumb” sometimes known as “heuristics.” Many of these rules of thumb used in aviation are usually easy to remember and are often quite useful under specific circumstances. For example, instrument students likely learned the “turn, time, twist, throttle, talk, and track” that make up the six T's rule of thumb. These can be used anytime during an instrument flight when crossing a fix or making a turn. However, with respect to weather that includes in-flight or preflight, rules of thumb can be quite dangerous. This presentation will list five common rules of thumb that instructors often teach that can have serious implications if not completely understood.

PRESENTED DURING THE EAA AIRVENTURE FLY-IN.  NO FEE FOR THE NAFI PRESENTATIONS, BUT AN ENTRANCE FEE IS REQUIRED BY EAA AIRVENTURE TO ENTER THE GROUNDS.
