Has it been a while since you refreshed your knowledge of all the altitudes and airspeeds you see in the cockpit, and those you don’t see but are built into your performance charts? Join us for an in depth review of general aviation air data systems by a CFII and pitot-static expert. You will learn about the two sources of air data: pressure-based and geometry-based (GPS). We will do a deep dive into the many different types of airspeed and altitude, where they come from, and which to use for different situations. We will talk about how pitot static systems are calibrated, and review the airspeed indicator arcs, markings, and speeds. The seminar will cover the incredible navigation capabilities we now have with GPS, but also it's limitations and why GPS does not replace pressure-based airspeed and altitude measurements for determining aircraft performance, including safety-critical parameters such as stall and approach speeds.

1. Target Audience: This presentation will be a review of both Private and Commercial ground school content about air data systems, and what all the airspeed and altitude names mean and how they are used. This seminar is targeted to any pilot wishing to refresh their knowledge in these areas. For Flight Instructors particularly, we hope this seminar will be a supplemental resource for your ground training. Please attend with your students, or encourage them to attend on their own!
2. Presenter: Donna Knighton has a BME degree from the University of Dayton, and was an Aircraft Performance and Flying Qualities engineer for military contractors and DoD for over 35 years, with a specialty expertise in pitot-static calibration and flight testing. She also developed a New Engineer Training course for the 412th Test Wing at Edwards AFB, teaching aircraft performance and pitot-static theory and test procedures, and was a certified Crew Resource Management (CRM) instructor for Air Force pilots and engineers. She is an ASEL/CFI/CFII/AGI with two jet authorizations, was a flight and ground instructor at the Edwards Aero Club for many years, and served as the Aero Club Safety Officer. She especially enjoys teaching seminars that make more advanced aircraft performance topics understandable and enjoyable to general aviation pilots.
3. Our Meetings: The Saturday FLY SAFE meetings are presented by the Antelope Valley FAASTeam, with planning, coordination, outreach, and admin by FAASTeam representatives Donna Knighton and Bob Stambovsky (ATP/CFI/CFII/MEI/AGI).
Refreshments will be provided. The terminal restaurant is open from 8Am to 2Pm for breakfast or lunch. And we have a new sound system for the terminal.
