Title:
Severe Clear Mountain Wave Ice and Inadvertent IMC
Topic:
Mountain Wave Awareness and ADM for GA Pilots in Severe Clear Conditions
Speaker(s):
Ryan Robinson, CFI
Brief Description:
Ryan Robinson, a Sopwith Camel Flying Club member and CFI, will share insights about mountain wave, ice and inadvertent IMC.
Pilots often launch into “severe clear” conditions believing the route is benign because every METAR is green. In Utah’s terrain, this can be dangerously misleading. This seminar teaches how to detect mountain wave, turbulence, and icing before launch, even when surface conditions appear perfect. Using a real aircraft (PA-28-180) and a real route (CNY-KSVR via Soldier Summit), participants will learn to interpret winds aloft, interpolate crest-level wind, read a forecast sounding, evaluate G-AIRMETs, and set hard personal gates for launch, ridge entry, escape, and diversion. Pilots will be able to make and defend a go/no-go decision and articulate a clear escape plan for inadvertent IMC or wave-induced downdrafts.
