Why does Van Nuys have multiple ILS approaches, and why are some used more frequently than others? Instrument approaches are much more than lines drawn on a chart. They are carefully designed procedures intended to provide safe, efficient access to an airport while accounting for terrain, obstacles, airspace, traffic flow, and weather conditions. This seminar explores the unique instrument procedures serving Van Nuys Airport and explains why understanding them can make every pilot safer and more proficient.

Attendees will examine the ILS Y Runway 16R, ILS Z Runway 16R, ILS Runway 16L, localizer approaches, missed approach procedures, equipment requirements, and the factors that determine when a particular approach is selected. Discussion will also include terrain and obstacle considerations, weather, communications, emergencies, common pilot errors, and practical techniques for operating safely within the complex Southern California airspace system.

Easy access from Balboa Blvd. Plenty of free parking. Seminar length approximately 2 hours.

What to Bring:
Please bring something to take notes with (pencil and paper recommended). The seminar is held inside an airplane hangar, so we recommend wearing light, comfortable clothing, as temperatures may become warm during the presentation.

About the Speaker:
Chris Ghazarian - CFI, CFII, MEI - Chris holds a bachelor's degree in Aviation Administration and serves as a flight instructor at LA Flight Academy, where he specializes in private, instrument, and multi-engine training. He is an active member of the National Association of Flight Instructors (NAFI) and a frequent participant in the FAA WINGS program, reflecting his commitment to continuing education and pilot proficiency. Beyond the classroom and cockpit, Chris is an avid outdoorsman and adventurer who regularly uses his own aircraft to pursue his interests throughout the western United States. Whether kitesurfing, snowboarding, backpacking, free diving, or exploring remote destinations, he combines his passion for aviation with a deep appreciation for nature, adventure, and the freedom of flight.
