Title:
Ditching The Sky - Hybrid Event
Topic:
Ditching and survival in the Pacific Ocean
Date and Time:
Wednesday, June 10, 2026, starting at 17:30 Pacific Daylight Time Download Calendar File
Speaker(s):
Heidi Porch
Brief Description:

Join us in Truckee this month for a harrowing tale of survival. In 1984 Heidi Porch realized a pilot's worst nightmare—an engine that quits. To make matters worse, she was 540 miles from land with only water in sight. Few have experienced such a life-threatening situation. Through her ordeal, she learned how to deal with an in-flight emergency, think quickly, devise survival strategies, and how to tough it out.? Heidi's awe-inspiring story is not one you will soon forget. She shares valuable lessons for pilots and you will learn what it is really like to contemplate and survive an ocean ditching. Join your fellow aviators live in Truckee or online via Zoom for a Fly Safe Seminar you wont want to miss!

About the Speaker:

Captain Heidi Porch is a retired Delta Air Lines pilot whose 35-year career took her from the flight deck of DC-9s and Airbus jets to the iconic Boeing 747-400. However, long before she was logging hours at Flight Level 350, Heidi was chasing flight time the scrappy way, by ferrying single-engine Cessnas from the factory in Wichita to California, and then across the Pacific Ocean to Australia and New Zealand. Because nothing says “building time” like a solo ocean crossing in a 182.

Heidi will come to Truckee to share some of those early-career adventures — including one flight that tested every ounce of skill, nerve, and luck. It is the true story of a ferry flight gone wrong: an engine failure 540 miles east of Hawaii, resulting in a forced ditching in the vast Pacific.

Spoiler alert: She lived to write her new book, Ditching the Sky
