Title:
Navigating the Bay Area with Dead Reckoning
Topic:
This Seminar Focuses on Dead Reckoning and Pilotage as Essential Navigation Skills When GPS Is Unavailable or Unreliable.
Date and Time:
Saturday, June 20, 2026, starting at 11:15 Pacific Daylight Time Download Calendar File
Speaker(s):
Kuni Migimatsu
Brief Description:

On any uneventful flight, we go from A to B without second thought. But sometimes things happen, and we have to resort to the basics.

We may be used to getting in and out of KPAO or KSQL, but can you figure out where you are and where you need to go without the use of GPS?

This seminar will show real-life examples of situations why dead reckoning skills are so important. With each situation, we will break down how to separate yourself from the situation, and how to apply your pilotage skills to bring yourself safely home.

The goal of the seminar is to emphasize the importance of situational awareness and what kind of landmarks can be great sources of navigation. Ultimately, knowing where we are and where we need to go will help us all be good neighbors, both in the air and to those on the ground.

Lastly, when we see other pilots deviate from procedures, instead of getting upset, we should instead help others be good neighbors by openly sharing our local knowledge with those who are willing to learn.
