Title:
VMC Club Pilot Safety for VFR Pilots - Go-Around and Beyond
Topic:
Decision Making on Short Final The Go-around and Beyond
Date and Time:
Tuesday, April 28, 2026, starting at 19:00 Central Daylight Time Download Calendar File
Speaker(s):
Gerry Visel
Brief Description:

This month’s scenario follows a VFR flight into a small airfield, where the cruise is uneventful — but the approach is not. As the airplane moves from descent to short final, localized conditions begin to challenge the plan. The question quickly becomes: do you continue, go around, try again, or head somewhere else?
This interactive discussion will focus on the judgment required when a stabilized approach begins to fall apart and the landing no longer feels like the right choice.
We’ll dig into:
• the difference between reported winds and what you may actually
encounter on approach
• the mental shift from “I’m landing” to “I’m going around”
• what comes after the go-around, including whether to re-enter the pattern
or divert
• how fuel, runway requirements, and fatigue can shape that next decision

Thanks to Doug Reeves of Bloomington's EAA Chapter 129 for inspiration for this scenario as well as Thomas P. Turner's analysis of the 2024 Honda Jet crash in Orlando.
