Title:
Topic of the Month
Topic:
Hindsight Bias & CFIT
Date and Time:
Monday, June 1, 2026, starting at 19:00 Eastern Daylight Time (16:00 PDT; 17:00 MDT; 18:00 CDT; 13:00 HST; 15:00 AKDT; 16:00 Arizona; 23:00 GMT)
Speaker(s):
Tim Cailloux
Brief Description:

Hindsight bias is the tendency to view past events as more predictable than they actually were and can undermine how pilots learn from accidents.

Using a CFIT scenario, we explore why reconstructing an accident chain backwards looks very different from what the pilot experienced looking forward. We'll discuss how hindsight bias distorts memory, breeds overconfidence, and blocks honest self-assessment.

Practical CFIT avoidance strategies are covered, including personal minimums, preflight planning, and objective in-flight performance monitoring. Attendees will leave with a better framework for learning from accidents in a way that is genuinely useful for their own flying.
