Title:
AOPA Air Safety Institute Safety Seminar
Topic:
Real Pilot Story: Trapped in the Hills
Date and Time:
Tuesday, May 5, 2026, starting at 19:00 Eastern Daylight Time Download Calendar File
Speaker(s):
Pilar Wolfsteller - ASI Senior Editor
Brief Description:

In November 2021, Arturo Guerra Perez, Sr. his son Arturo, Jr., both private pilots, face a harrowing return flight to their home in Monterey, Mexico from a weekend of aviation adventure in Texas. Just a few miles from home, they encounter intense mountain turbulence and a sinking cloud ceiling. They are familiar with the terrain—it’s basically their backyard—so they aim for a gap between a low, overcast sky and the hills ahead. Pilar Wolfsteller, Senior Editor at AOPA’s Air Safety Institute and commercial pilot/CFI will discuss this tragic accident, and what lessons other pilots can learn from it.

The webinar is 1 hour long and will feature questions and answers opportunities throughout the presentation.
