Title:
Visual Traffic Separation Collision Avoidance and the NTSB Final Report on the Potomac Midair
Topic:
'Maintain Visual Separation!' What are the risks? How do we scan effectively for traffic in VMC?
Date and Time:
Wednesday, April 8, 2026, starting at 19:00 Eastern Daylight Time Download Calendar File
Speaker(s):
David Kornreich
Brief Description:

What went wrong on January 28, 2025? The NTSB has issued a final report on the collision between an army Blackhawk helicopter and American Airlines jet over the Potomac river. We will review and discuss this final report and how, amongst other things, we can be fooled by background lights or objects into thinking that we have an aircraft in sight when we really don't. We’ll be discussing pilot responsibilities for collision avoidance as stated in guidance and reference documents.  We’ll also touch on some techniques and technologies that will help to avoid collisions.
