Title:
How Good Are VR-Trained Pilots? A Review of the VR-Heli START FAA Pilot Transition Study
Topic:
Virtual Reality Trained Pilots
Speaker(s):
Cliff Johnson, Eleni Sotiropoulos, Nick Mayhew, Stephanie Rebeix
Brief Description:
In this session, we’ll review the FAA virtual reality (VR) Pilot Transition Study conducted at Marshall University in South Charleston, West Virginia, from July through October 2025 using a Loft Dynamics H125 virtual reality 6 DOF (degrees of freedom) full-motion simulator. The aim of the study was to answer the following research questions: 1. To what extent can VR simulators reduce training costs and improve skill proficiency without compromising learning outcomes? 2. How effective are VR simulators in teaching essential piloting skills and maneuvers, and is there evidence of any effects from negative transfer of training skills? 3. Can VR simulation training prepare students sufficiently for passing a checkride to Airman Certification Standards (ACS)?
