Title:
Saturday Morning FLY SAFE Meeting on Winter Flying Operations

Date and Time:
Saturday, February 7, 2026, starting at 09:00 Pacific Standard Time Download Calendar File
Speaker(s):
Donna Knighton, Bob Stambovsky
Brief Description:

This seminar will review some critical topics for flying safely in the winter.  You don’t have to fly far in California to encounter varying degrees of winter weather challenges! We will review operational and decision-making challenges for both local operations and cross-countries.  Preparing your aircraft for flight, and making sure residual ice or moisture don’t ruin your day after takeoff.  Cold engine starts. How to determine freezing levels. Flight into “known icing”, “should-have-expected-it“ icing, and unexpected icing. Conditions, symptoms, and procedures for icing in carbureted and fuel-injected engines. Obtaining good forecast data , and contingency and fuel planning. Aircraft performance and runway conditions. We will also add some “early spring” topics especially pertinent to our airport – crosswind and gusty wind operations, and finish with a discussion of personal minimums.

 We are inviting flight instructors from local flight schools to take part in the Q&A and offer their expertise.
