Title:
Stabilized Approaches and Go Arounds
Topic:
Stabilized Approaches and Go Arounds For Regular and Backcountry Operations
Speaker(s):
Jim Barnosky ATP, CFII-ASMEL FAASTeam Representative
Brief Description:
Nearly 20% of fatal loss of control accidents occur during the approach phase of flight. Stabilized approaches and go around preparation are the foundation of successful landings no matter where or what you fly. They are especially important for back country operations, where terrain and obstacles may require complicated flight paths in and out of the airstrip. The presentation will discuss the elements of a stabilized approach, how to recognize when an approach becomes unstable, and how to prepare for a timely go around. It will include case studies taken from NTSB accident reports illustrating the risks of continuing unstable approaches.
