Title:
AirVenture 2025 Forum - AI to Enhance Flight Training
Topic:
Using Flight Recorders and Artificial Intelligence to Enhance Flight Debriefs
Date and Time:
Thursday, July 24, 2025, starting at 10:00 Central Daylight Time Download Calendar File
Speaker(s):
Nikola Kostic, Paul Storaasli
Brief Description:

Flight training is costly, and key lessons are often missed in busy cockpits or rushed debriefs. NAVI AI records audio and flight data, then uses an FAA-trained language model to highlight learning moments. Students review debriefs later to boost retention.

Flight training is expensive. Maximizing learning from every flight is essential. Yet, students often retain only a fraction of what they experience in the cockpit—an environment filled with distractions and high workload. Traditional post-flight debriefs can miss key learning moments, especially when time is limited. Furthermore, while immediate debriefs do provide primacy, a student debriefing at a time of their choosing well after a flight enhances learning due to the laws of Readiness, Exercise, and Recency.

NAVI AI is a ground-based debriefing system designed to solve this problem. It records cockpit intercom audio and flight data, then uses a large language model—trained on FAA publications and hundreds of prior flights—to analyze and summarize performance. The system highlights specific learning moments, explains what happened, and identifies areas for improvement.

At Sling Pilot Academy, we have been pioneering NAVI AI with hundreds of training flights. Students consistently report that reviewing their flights at home with detailed, AI-generated debriefs—often covering 30 to 40 learning points—helps solidify their understanding far beyond what’s possible in a standard post-flight CFI debrief.
