Title:
Fly Smart - Avoid Surprises Using Structured Decision Making
Topic:
Building A Proactive Safety Mindset Through Structured Aeronautical Decision Making And Continuous Risk Assessment
Date and Time:
Thursday, August 14, 2025, starting at 19:00 Eastern Daylight Time Download Calendar File
Speaker(s):
Robert Breaux, Ph.D., CFII
Brief Description:

An interactive seminar that reframes risk management through the lens of Aeronautical Decision Making (ADM).   Explore tools like DECIDE, IMSAFE, and the PAVE checklist, while discovering how General Risk Management (GRM) complements ADM’s cognitive focus.

- Implement strategies to disrupt optimism bias and establish reliable personal minimums, ensuring safer flight decisions under pressure.
- Recognize and counter cognitive biases in real time, empowering pilots to make clearer, more objective decisions mid-flight.
- Apply GRM analysis to design flight-specific risk matrices, providing structured insight that sharpens go/no-go judgment.
- Engage with scenario-based ADM exercises to refine judgment, translating abstract principles into actionable cockpit decisions.

Utilizing a workshop structure, the seminar incorporates guided discussion, scenario-based modeling, and interactive cognitive exercises. Participants will engage with tools outlined in FAA AC 60-22 and FAA-H-8083-9, including IMSAFE, PAVE, and the DECIDE model, supplemented by GRM methodologies such as cost-benefit analysis and risk matrix construction.

Upon completion, participants will be able to:

  • Apply behavioral markers of sound judgment in go/no-go contexts using ADM strategies
  • Demonstrate real-time bias recognition and cognitive correction techniques
  • Construct personalized risk matrices utilizing GRM tools to support flight planning
  • Integrate ADM protocols into everyday flight operations with improved decision accuracy

Part 91 pilots fly without dispatchers or corporate safety officers. Every go/no-go call rests on your shoulders, and today’s accident data show that 94 percent of GA mishaps spring from pilot decisions. This highly practical workshop equips you to blend ADM’s real-time, human-centric tools with GRM’s structured, data-driven techniques. The seminar will leave you with:

- A clear understanding of when and how to run IMSAFE self-checks and PAVE surveys
- Hands-on practice stepping through enhanced DECIDE versus constructing a risk matrix and cost-benefit analysis
- Strategies to shatter optimism bias and reinforce personal minimums
- A ready-to-use toolkit that directly targets the root causes of Part 91 accidents

Join us to transform “routine” flights into deliberate, well-managed operations—and make every decision count toward safer skies.
