Topic:
Controlled Flight Into Terrain (CFIT) Avoidance
Date and Time:
Tuesday, May 27, 2025, starting at 19:00 Central Daylight Time Download Calendar File
Speaker(s):
Dave Hollaway, experienced aviator of 47 years and currently a Human Systems Integrator at NASA JSC
Brief Description:

This presentation highlights the inherent risk that Controlled Flight Into Terrain (CFIT) poses for General Aviation pilots. CFIT occurs when an airworthy aircraft is flown, under the control of a qualified pilot, into terrain with inadequate awareness on the part of the pilot of the impending collision. GA CFIT accidents account for 17% of all GA fatalities. More than half occurred during IMC, but many occur in VFR and clear weather. This presentation identifies major causes of CFIT mishaps and provides recommendations and strategies, including Approach and Landing Accident Reduction (ALAR), to decrease CFIT incidents within the GA community.

Dave Hollaway, is a NASA certified aircraft mishap investigator, and a Human Systems Integrator on Robotics & Intelligence for Human Spaceflight. This is a 1.5 hour event.
